Lesley Underwood specializes in painting from life; whether it is a floral still life, plein air landscape or portrait. She tries to capture the feeling of the scene and fill it with life and color. “I love so many different kinds of paintings and palettes from a limited tonal palette, a tonal colorist palette to full on color. Sometimes I want to paint with a subdued tonal palette, but in the end, I am always seduced by color.” People love Lesley’s clean colors that seem to make the subject jump off the canvas and come to life. “When I look at a scene, the first thing I focus on is the light, the color of the light. Then I look at the temperature and shape of the shadows. What excites me is how the light strikes my subject. How it rakes across the form.” Now retired from her fine art and antiques appraising business, she is dedicating her life in pursuit of painting.
