As an artist I would describe myself as somewhat of a Modernist who paints in the manner of the revered Old Masters. My technique includes an academic approach to composition, a precise tonal underpainting and a layering of oil paint mixed with an oil medium called glazing . In this process there is a genuine unfolding of form and atmosphere. The painting becomes three-dimensional and as I work I am always searching for treasures of exquisite color, light and luminosity to present themselves. I am most inspired by artists Wassily Kandinsky, Vermeer, Fairfield Porter, Euan Uglow and Gerhard Richter.
Raised by artist parents, I am a fifth-generation Northern California who has been so fortunate to have lived, studied, hiked and observed art in many countries. I began atudying art at UC Santa Barbara where in the late 60’s I was introduced to conceptual art and was encouraged to be a discerning thinker and observer. I decided then and there to become a representational painter and pursue classical training! After a year abroad at the University of Stockholm, Sweden and a stint with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, I started a retail career and became a buyer/ product design executive for upscale retailers affording me International travel to many countries including Sweden, the Soviet Union, Asia, India and Europe. Thankfully I have visited my favorite paintings in the most famous museums all around the world!
In the 80’s I moved to New York City and Connecticut. I retired from retailing to raise a daughter and resume painting. I attended classes at Silvermine Guild of Arts in New Canaan CT, Lyme Art Academy in CT and the Art Student’s League in NYC, was a member of the Brush and Palette, a portrait and figure painting group in New Haven, CT and a member of a six artist co-op, The Elm City Artist Gallery, located on the campus of Yale University.
After forty years, I finally returned home to California last year and settled in Napa with my family close by.
